The best laid plans

The holiday is ready to start

Today is the first day of the holiday, so we have our bags packed and are ready to go. However, originally the trip was due to start tomorrow - what happened? See the details below.

When plans don't quite work

As I discussed in yesterday's post, the plans for our journey were settled in October subject to the bookings becoming open. But of course, as Rabbie Burns reminded us in his wonderful poem called TO A MOUSE:

But Mousie, thou art no thy-lane,

In proving foresight may be vain:

The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men

Gang aft agley

Which for those who don't know the poem or the Scotch dialect roughly translated means:

But Mouse you are not alone,
in proving that planning may be in vain,

because the best laid plans of Mice and Men

often go wrong.

So, when I came to book the start of the journey - the trip from Taffs Well to Barcelona - I had all the times of travel sorted. It was planned for us to leave on Friday Morning:

  • 5.28am Taffs Well to Cardiff (Arrive 5.47am)
  • 5.53am Cardiff Central to London Paddington (Arrive 7.44am)
  • 7.49am London Paddington to London St. Pancras International (Arrive 8.05am)
  • 9.31am London St. Pancras International to Paris Gare de Nord (Arrive 12.59pm)
  • 1.15pm Paris Gare de Nord to Paris Gare de Lyon (Arrive 1.35pm)
  • 2.42pm Paris Gare de Lyon to Barcelona Sants (Arrive 9.32pm)

But when I came to book the train travel from Taffs Well to London, the tickets wouldn't come up. I was very puzzled, until going to the Great Western webpage I discovered:

A closed Severn Tunnel and a Rail Replacement Bus between Newport and Bristol Parkway. The 5.28am from Taffs Well would now get me to London Paddington by 8.51am and to St. Pancras by 9.15am which, with border controls into the EU at St. Pancras International Terminal meaning you need to arrive 40 minutes before departure, there would be no chance of catching the 9.30am Eurostar that I had already booked.

Thankfully, Drew was able to rearrange some things and take a flexi afternoon in work, so we could replace the early start tomorrow with a gentle afternoon trip to from Taffs Well to London, an overnight stop in a hotel close to St. Pancras and a more gentle start tomorrow morning. So, the disruption to the plans led to an extra days holiday - not a bad outcome!

Underground

Of course, even these plans might not go without a hitch. London Underground has strikes today.

So our journey from Paddington to St. Pancras may be disrupted! Though it looks like we may be OK, on the Hammersmith and City line if not the Circle line.

I'll update on the journey in my next post.

  1. Life with be so boring if everything went to plan, and just think you've added an extra day to your trip. Stay safe and enjoy the adventure

    1. True Sue,

I'm planning to have a pleasant meal this evening as a bonus treat, so I should be thanking Network Rail, not complaining.

  2. TMS commented that the line to St John's worked earlier today for them, so here's hoping your line will work too. At least it's only a three mile stroll along the Marylebone Road if you are stuck.

    1. Strangely I was thinking just the same, Janet.

I've done that stroll a number of times in the past, when I was regularly travelling to the OU in Milton Keynes. If it wasn't for all the crossings, it would be quite quick. But with lights at almost every junction it can be more stop than go!

  3. Our last Eurostar trip (May) involved more downtime at St Pancras International. The EU staff are now doing iris scans as well as fingerprinting, so there is more delay.

    1. Hi Robin,

We went through the new process pretty speedily at Málaga Airport in April, so hopefully it will be as good tomorrow.

  4. I will always consider you as a master of planning. ("the best laid plans" etc). I remember you used to have a notice on your desk for the benefit of dissertation students. It read something like "The fact that you have made no plans for this occasion is not a good reason why I should have to change mine."

    1. 😂

Well Robin, they were business students, if they hadn't learnt time management skills by the final year of their degree, or for their masters, then they needed to learn quickly 🤣

  5. I am quite the fan of the night before you leave staying in a hotel. Which coincidentally happened to me last year when my plane did not arrive and the airline moved us to a hotel as soon as we got to the airport...and of course I am one always adds an hour to the time needed🤣

    1. Hi Linda,

Yes, I normally do that when flying too (both the night before and arriving very early) but a day of leaving Taffs Well and arriving in Barcelona appealed to me, though it was not to be.

Still we should be back on schedule by tomorrow evening, Eurostar and SNCF willing.

    2. RobinJazz here (Google won't let me post anything in my own name today). We've tried both methods with Eurostar. Stay in London the night before and get a cheap train out next morning. Or go much later, get a cheap ticket, and then a hotel in Belgium. My preference is the latter: last time we arrived into Mechelen, and it was such a charming place we have it on our list to return.

    3. Hi Robin,

When we did the trip around Northern Europe and made Brussels our first night destination we did that.

Of course we weren't covering anything like the distances we are today. Where our London 9.30am start has seen us travel from North to South through France as we cross the border into Spain in 20 minutes time.

  6. yep, plenty of rail replacement buses trundling through Magor at the moment. Lots of slightly irritated people on board, probably really annoyed if they are doing the Newport to Severn Tunnel route but also live in Magor and know the bus won't stop near their house!

    1. Hi Lloyd,

We used to see a lot of rail replacement buses when the Metro was being built in Taffs Well, they are not as comfortable or as direct as the train, so I know that disgruntled feeling.
